The Swan Hotel in Wells, Somerset, is one of England’s oldest continuously operating hotels, dating back to 1422. Established during the reign of the infant King Henry VI, it originally served as a coaching inn for travellers journeying across the Mendip Hills. Situated directly opposite the magnificent Wells Cathedral, the hotel has welcomed notable guests over the centuries, including King Henry VII, Queen Anne of Denmark, and Sir Winston Churchill. Its historical significance is commemorated with a blue plaque, highlighting its role in the rich tapestry of Wells’ heritage. (swanhotelwells.co.uk, somersetcountygazette.co.uk)
Architecturally, the Swan Hotel showcases a blend of medieval and later styles. While parts of the building date back to the 16th century or earlier, significant restructuring and refronting occurred in the late 18th or early 19th centuries. Notable features include a carved wooden swan above the former carriage entrance and cast-iron balconies that add to its charm. The hotel’s rear wing was rebuilt in 1885, and interior elements like moulded beams and stone fireplaces reflect its historical character. In recent years, the Swan has been modernised to offer four-star accommodations while preserving its historical essence. In 2022, it celebrated its 600th anniversary with a community art installation of 600 recycled plastic flowers, symbolising each year of its service to visitors.
