Paranormal Investigations and Abandoned Buildings – Why Trespassing Isn’t Worth It

The allure of an old, crumbling building—windows smashed, ivy crawling up its sides, with an air of forgotten history—can be irresistible to a paranormal investigator. Many assume that if a building is abandoned, it’s “free game” for exploration. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Trespassing in abandoned buildings is not only illegal, it’s dangerous, disrespectful, and entirely avoidable.

Trespassing is a Crime – No Exceptions

First and foremost, entering an abandoned building without permission is trespassing. Whether it’s boarded up, fenced off, or appears neglected, the building still belongs to someone. Even if you don’t damage anything, your presence without consent is unlawful. If caught, you may face civil action, fines, or even arrest.

Many people mistakenly believe that because a building is derelict, no one cares about it. But that’s rarely true. It may be privately owned, listed for redevelopment, or part of a historical registry. Entering without the proper permissions shows a lack of respect—not just for the law, but for the site itself.

Serious Safety Risks

Abandoned buildings are often structurally unsound. Rotting floors, unstable staircases, asbestos, broken glass, exposed wires—you name it. What appears to be an atmospheric location for an investigation could quickly escalate into a serious emergency. Falling through a floor, getting trapped, or being injured in a collapse are very real risks.

Emergency services face these same risks if you need their help. By entering a property that is unsafe or abandoned, you are putting more than yourself at risk or injury.

Lack Of Thought Can Be Equal To Lack of Respect

Paranormal investigation should always be based on respect. If you’re breaking in, climbing fences, or sneaking around, the distress and upset that is caused to the owner is never worth the cheap thrill you may feel.

Legitimate Locations Are Out There

Here’s the good news: there are plenty of incredible locations that welcome paranormal investigators—legally. Old prisons, asylums, mansions, mills, theatres, air raid shelters—you name it. Many of these locations are available to hire. They often have staff who can provide you with historical context, and some even offer access to equipment.

These venues are safer, support preservation efforts, and allow you to investigate without the constant fear of being caught—or hurt. You’ll also be able to share your findings publicly without worrying about incriminating yourself.

A Better Way Forward

At Paranormal-Consultant, we encourage curiosity, exploration, and open-mindedness—but not at the expense of safety. There are so many exciting, active, and historically rich places available to you without the need to break the law or risk your well-being.

If you genuinely respect the spirits you’re seeking to connect with, start by respecting the spaces they inhabit. The paranormal deserves more than trespassing.
